The main piazza is the heartbeat and pride of the village, the spot where festivals and processions start, visitors are escorted, and the town’s past is honored. Wild donkey races take place here in June and September, and at Christmastime, a living nativity scene is enacted in the square.
There are numerous events held in the town. Here are the ones you don’t want to miss:
The Palio della Tonna: the town’s main folk event, is held on two dates, on the first Sunday of June and on the second Sunday of September. It’s a donkey race with some very professional jockeys. The winning district gets a painted flag and a year’s worth of bragging rights.
Civit’Arte: an interesting review of art and culture held in the month of August in the central square of Civita di Bagnoregio. Here actors of various companies take part, entertaining the public with their art.
Festa della Castagna: in the month of October, roasted chestnuts are on sale in the streets of the village along with plenty of live music and market stalls.
Living Nativity: certainly the most interesting event held in Civita di Bagnoregio, the procession is made up of 50 figures in period costume, the performances are held on the dates of December 26 and January 1 and January 6.
